Microsoft Prevents AutoRun Function

Software giant Microsoft plans to prevent devices that can be attached to personal computers from running automatically when they are inserted into the PC, to prevent them from infecting computers with viruses and other malicious software.

Once infected with malware PC, users may feel that they are suffering from a slower computer or may be required to get professional computer repair.

Microsoft experts wrote in blogs that the company had modified AutoRun and AutoPlay technologies to prevent malware from infecting computer systems.

Microsoft’s move will affect all removable devices, such as USB drives. The company is expected to unveil the new changes at the Windows 7 Release Candidate. In the future, Microsoft intends to update other operating systems such as Windows XP and Vista.

The move comes in the wake of the rapid spreading of the Conficker worm, which has infected millions of PCs worldwide.

Microsoft will only allow the automatic operation of non-writable DVDs and CD-ROMs, which are not usually used to spread malicious software.
“With these changes, [even] if you insert a USB flash drive that has photos and has been infected by malware, you can be confident that the tasks displayed are all from software already on your computer,” Arik Cohen, a program manager on the Microsoft’s core user experience team wrote.
